Re-Born

In silence he speaks

No words

A fusion of being

I am

He is

That is the reality.

He touches deep

Not a feeling

But a knowledge

Knowing it has happened

A realization

The dawning light.

He waits

I approach

He responds

He in me responds

The moment of re-birth.

In Search

What have I lost?

What have I gained?

What more has life to bring?

What have I found?

What have I missed?

What lies in store for me?

Full measure overflowing?

A cup of bitter wine?

Be it as it was meant to be

From the moment of light.

For I was made to lose and gain,

To search and find.

To grow until mortality

Becomes divine.

For Mike

Twenty-two years –

Loss of not knowing you.

Love at first sight.

First dance by chance.

And even though the glance

Becomes routine

My life is lived in being with you.

Two worlds, two lives as one

Combine and compensate.

Soft eyes have

Captured my heart,

Coloured my dreams,

Calmed my fears,

Guided my way,

Gilded your love.

Husband, Father and Son

Defined as one

So precious in my eyes.

New President

First citizen of our land

Historic land,

Land of the Celts,

Island of saints and scholars.

Invaded land,

Liberated land,

Divided nation.

Land of the young and

Hope of the future.

First citizen of our land –

Cherish our pride,

Our heritage and

Our emerging destiny in your hands.

We, the people, have seen fit

To exalt you.

Now, inspire and inspirit

This restless and romantic nation.

Bring your office to bear upon events

Bring your person to the people.

Embody the enshrined ideals

So dearly paid for.

Go forth and be the face of Ireland

Among the nations of the earth.

Take our seal as President and

First citizen of our land.

Birthday Boy

I’m sure this man

Has long outgrown the boy.

And yet sometimes

The eyes and smile betray

The shy and tender

Child of prey.

Today another thirty something

And looking back

You well must know

Where strife and rife were born.

The years like short

Autumnal days sweep by

And rustic trees

Now raped of leaves

Our souls imply.

Something or maybe thirty something

Still to go – who knows?

But sometime on some

Sunny afternoon

Take time to hold that little boy

And underneath the falling leaves

Go gently wipe the tears away

And tell him of the buds of May.

Remember in the darkest night

The flickering candle casts a light

And worries waxed upon the brow

May melt and disappear

As birthday greetings come to cheer.

Atlanta Games

Atlanta Games are calling you,

Come, take your place among the brave

And make your mark upon the world

And set for us a noble stage

Where body, mind and soul engage

To leap beyond the highest bounds.

The sweat, the tears, the pain, the fears

The dreams of past and future years

Emerge as one whose channelled flow

May lead you to that golden glow.

And even if the gleaming fades.

Worries bound and heart sinks low,

Tis those who dare will always win

And stand upon their pedestal.

Breakdown

I’ve seen the elements of earth and fire

And wind and rain at once combine,

Come crashing down,

Invading tranquil days.

Destroying happy childhood scenes,

Ending future hopes and dreams.

Chaos and turmoil

Arising from the soul of man

As he fights for his life.

Drowning against the swelling tide,

Holding the breaking heart,

Wanting to be whole again.

The look of glacier eyes

That know no depth.

The cry for sanity to reign

In the tormented mind.

Trapped in the mid-night,

The nightmare won’t cut loose.

Wretched reaching, out of control,

Reeling and wheeling and spinning.

He cannot comprehend the happening,

The abandoning of life and love.

Victim of circumstance,

And the reel keeps rolling,

Playback after playback.

Too many “if onlys” and “what ifs”,

Needing to be with,

Wanting to run from,

To hide the face, the shame.

To dull the pain.

Hoping against hope

For the great escape.

Know Your Heart

Go to the desert

When you need to know your heart.

Not ten or twenty

But a hundred miles apart.

There you’ll feel the sun and wind

And dust against your face

And you may thirst and thirst

And search without a trace.

And as your steps grow weary

And you wander to and fro

And you get a fearful feeling

And tears begin to flow.

Just let them come,

Allow what’s there to be.

The truth abides

And seeks to set you free.

God

Absolute Paragon Supreme,

Inconceivable in our minds,

Absurd to our reason,

Uncontrolled by our desires,

Inescapable in our lives.

Your definition is undefined,

Your totality unbound.

Ambiguous in nature and form,

Reflected in and absorbed by humanity.

Whole yet particular.

At once allied to yet remote from your creation.

Extra universal yet intimately natural.

Incredible complex of simplicity

Networking eternity.

Irrational Belief

Your thoughts were not my thoughts

Yet because I was afraid

I shared your view.

Your ways were not my ways

Yet because I wanted to be part

I went and followed you.

Your words were not my words

Yet because I wanted to be liked

I adopted your style.

Your opinion was not my opinion

Yet because I did not trust myself

I went along with you.

Too willing to construct my own defeat.

Too unsure to listen to my own voice.

Yet it always seemed so worthy,

For a good reason,

For a good cause.

And even fellow souls kept me company.

And as we walked we never knew,

That for the best part we had lost our way.

We had lost our day.

Until we saw the light,

Learnt the truth,

Walked a new path

And saw the summit in out sight.
